Although the season officially ended last February, the NFL is always in the news, deeming it the king of all sports. Now that the race for the Triple Crown has ended it is time to prepare for another season of football betting. We’re here to tell you that there are a number of good reasons to at least look into what is available and get an early start on NFL handicapping. Many sports books already have a wide range of predictions posted from total team wins to division and conference winners and even Super Bowl champions.
To makes things clear, we are not encouraging you to place your bets right now. Besides, sound football betting is all about gathering as much information about a team and using it to place smart bets. This means that it makes sense to wait until rosters have been completely formed, training camp begins and you have a good idea of which veterans will return along with members of the coaching staff and so on. However, there are a few aspects that need to be considered, factors that may lead you to take advantage of the current NFL predictions instead of waiting until the 2008 season begins.
Competition is Much Less Fierce
While it is always good to get an early jump on the competition, you must realize that you are not the only one who is on the prowl for free NFL picks. At the same time, you do have a few advantages. With Major League Baseball still going strong, the public is not investing much of their money into the NFL just yet. The odds have not been aimed towards publicly favored teams, although this is sure to change once the money starts rolling in. If you have your eye on a team that the public is likely to go after, and see value in the lines currently posted, it is a good idea to take advantage of this before the value is decreased due to the level of competition. In most cases, hugely favored teams like the Patriots and Colts probably will not generate any more value than they have right now. The same holds true for the teams who are heavily favored because of off-season pick-ups, such as the Browns and Chargers.
You Are Ahead of the Game
Of course there are more advantages to gathering critical information and placing bets later. On the other hand, if you conduct your research on NFL predictions now, you stand the chance to begin the season on a good note with a significant advantage over those who still have a lot to catch up on. If you study your homework intently and learn ways to gain an edge on the current lines, you may determine that the advantage may not get any bigger as the 2008 approaches. This gives you all the more reason to start looking for your free NFL picks in advance.
Smart Bets on Things You Can’t Change
When making the decision to start football betting early, you need to make yourself aware of how teams are currently structured, and how they are likely to be structured when the season kicks off. If you’re trying to base NFL predictions on factors that are not likely to change significantly, you may want to hold off on the current lines. For instance, most of us understand that Miami’s quarterback situation is a complete mess. With three quarterbacks competing for the lead role, we have no idea of who will actually get the start. What we do know is that each of them is inexperienced and will be faced with the challenge of resurrecting a team that was 1-15 last year. If you predict that the Dolphins will struggle from an offensive aspect, but feel the public will favor them because of the Bill Parcels factor, you can make out nicely by going against Miami now instead of later.
Beware of Media Hype
How many times has this happened? You develop an opinion during the off-season of a certain team, only to find that all the “so-called” experts are swayed to the contrary. Now you find yourself wondering if your NFL predictions were all wrong. In many instances, those highly opinionated sports writers and analysts turn out to be wrong. Do not let biased coverage sway you from your opinion. By the time the season rolls around, hundreds of sports writers, reporters and announcers will return to give their views on just who will conquer the NFL this year. Most of them are probably on vacation right now - this gives you an opportunity to devise a sound football betting strategy before they return and fill your head with confusion.
Play Both Sides of the Fence
If you are looking to a get a jump on NFL handicapping, you can gain a significant advantage by playing both sides of the fence, especially with team totals. If the sports books are currently posting a line that seems ridiculous, you can play against it and then play the other side as the number moves using a teaser usually 6 or 7 points. This is a great way to “middle” the number, profiting off the public response and the sports book. If the number happens to fall in between the two numbers you bet, there’s a chance that you can win a big payoff all for one price. This is a low risk move with potentially high rewards - an NFL handicapping dream.
