2008 College Football Preview
The ACC
With Boston College having lost quarterback Matt Ryan to the NFL,
the ACC just may be wide open. Coach Jagodzinski is confident that
senior QB Chris Crane will be more than ready to step up to the
challenge. Clemson is a favorite for many people’s 2008 college
predictions. Not only do they have a future NFL prospect in Quarterback
Cullen Harper, but the dynamic rushing duo of C.J. spiller and James
Davis as well. Could this be their breakout season? Florida State
comes back with loads of talent yet remains questionable. The academic
scandal from last year and the recent arrest of their leading wide
receiver has critics wondering if this team will be too distracted.
The league also has two new coaches in Georgia Tech’s Paul
Johnson and Duke’s David Cutcliffe. Is his experience enough
to finally make the Blue Devils one of your college football picks?
The Big East
West Virginia has been the talk of the college football nation this
off-season. The team hopes to make a fresh start with new coach
Bill Stewart and their new offensive coordinator Jeff Mullen. With
a good number of their starters returning, they could be a good
pick for early 2008 college football predications. Pittsburgh looks
good with Junior running back LeSean McCoy who rushed for over 110
yards per game last season. At the same time they’re locked
in a three-way competition at the quarterback position. Louisville
is hoping they can bounce back from a disappointing 6-6 season.
Hunter Cantwell will finally get to prove his ability and lead the
Cardinals after waiting behind QB Brian Brohm for three seasons.
The college football picks get really interesting when throwing
Notre Dame into the picture. Coach Charlie Weiss is looking to make
a statement after enduring one of the worst seasons in team history.
The Big Ten
The 2008 College Football predictions revolve around two teams in
the Big Ten - Ohio State and their long-time rivals, Michigan. After
being thrashed in back to back BCS championship games, critics are
wondering if Ohio State can recover. The team lost a major part
of their lineup to the draft and desperately need to fill a few
defensive gaps. Michigan is dealing with a new coach and an entirely
different offense. It will be interesting to see how they match
up with the Buckeyes minus QB Chad Henne and thorough rusher Mike
Hart. Don’t leave Michigan State out of your college football
picks. They lost wide receiver Devin Thomas to the draft but show
promise with four underclassman.
The Big 12
We continue our preview with the Big 12 conference. Kansas makes
a great college football pick coming fresh off a win at the Orange
Bowl. Exceptions for this team are high to say the least. We expect
a lot of good things from Nebraska as well, especially with Bo Pelini
returning as head coach. As a former member of the Huskers’
staff, Pelini has been well received by the organization. Oklahoma
makes a good 2008 college football prediction as well. Versatile
QB Sam Bradford declined the NFL to stay behind and run the Sooners
no-huddle offense. Oklahoma State isn’t to be left out of
the discussion as they come back with a dynamic ariel attack. The
concern is if they can sustain with it offensive coordinator Larry
Fedora leaving for a coaching job at Southern Mississippi.
The Pac 10
The Pacific 10 just may be one of the most competitive conferences
this season with a number of quality teams. Southern California
leads many of the early 2008 college football predictions. Forced
to sit out a season following a transfer from Arkansas, USC QB Mitch
Mustain has looked sharp in spring scrimmages with six impressive
touchdowns. Their rivals, UCLA, are looking questionable as new
head coach Rick Neuheisel already has issues at quarterback. Following
a good year, QB Patrick Cowan is expected to be out for the entire
season due to a knee injury while the team predicts that Ben Olson
will be out for at least six weeks because of issues with his foot.
Washington was a solid college football pick in 2007 but things
look bleak so far. Center Juan Garcia’s season is in the air
after suffering a devastating injury. This comes afer starting every
game for two consecutive seasons and being selected as a second-team
all-Pac 10 player.
The Southeast
We end our 2008 college football predictions with the fully-loaded
Southeastern conference. Coach Les Miles is hoping the LSU Tigers
can repeat as champions despite the problems of quarterback Ryan
Perrilloux. If Perrilloux is suspended again, Miles may have to
make a tough decision between his three backup QBs. The Florida
Gators are expected to have another solid season in 2008. Fans are
hopeful that running back Chris Rainey can step it up and take a
load off of quarterback Tim Tebow. With the season rapidly approaching,
Tebow is already favored to when back-to-back Heisman Trophies.
Coming off a win at the Sugar Bowl, Georgia returns with a hard-hitting
front line. Senior DT Jeff Owens was nominated for the Ronnie Lott
Trophy along with junior corner back Asher Allen. Their coach is
confident of matching up with the explosive offenses of both LSU
and Florida.
